Last night I won my third consecutive French Open Singles title! It was a great match against Steve Virgona, but I felt in control for most of the match.
The first set was tense to start, Steve and I were both trying to find our rhythm as well as figure out the others game plan. At 1-1 I grabbed a little breathing room going 3/2 up before a very long deuce game ensued. I felt like my serve and return of serve this whole week were very on, feeling like a could put the ball where ever I wanted on both. I managed to get the 3/2 game after a few game points each way, and that gave me the momentum to push through the set taking it 6/2.
The second set saw more of the same, we were battling it out at the beginning of the set, but I felt that I always had a little more consistency when it was needed. I raised out to a 4/1 lead and then 5/3. My backhand forcing for the dedan was very accurate, as well as my forces for the grille. This helped me to control the service end, which is the best way to gain an upper-hand. I closed out the set in a hard fought 5/3 game to take a 2 set to 0 lead.
The third set I really tried to put my foot down. I know better than anyone how good Steve can be, and that if you give him even one point, that can change the entire match. I managed to stay on top though racing ahead and finishing the set 6/1.
The final score was 6/2 6/3 6/1 and I am very happy with my level of play the entire week. That is my third consecutive French Open title, and my 6th Open Singles title. Tonight is the doubles final which I know Steve will be looking for revenge in! It starts at 7PM French time which is 1PM east coast time.
